Storage
Store any leftover Cowboy Butter Steak and Tortellini in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. The flavors continue to blend together as it sits, which makes the leftovers just as delicious the next day.
When you are ready to reheat, place the desired portion in a skillet over medium low heat. Add a splash of cream, milk, or water to help loosen the sauce and bring back the creamy texture. Stir occasionally until everything warms through.
You can also reheat it in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each round so the sauce heats evenly.
This dish does not freeze well because the creamy sauce and tortellini can change texture after thawing, so it works best when enjoyed fresh or within a few days from the refrigerator.
FAQ
Yes! Ribeye, sirloin, New York strip, or even flank steak all work well for this recipe. Just cut the steak into bite sized pieces so it cooks quickly and evenly in the skillet.
Yes, frozen tortellini works great. Simply cook it according to the package instructions before adding it to the skillet. The texture and flavor will still blend perfectly with the creamy cowboy butter sauce.
You can still make a flavorful version by combining garlic, parsley, a little lemon juice, paprika, and red pepper flakes with the butter. This will create a similar bold and buttery flavor profile. Recipe below:
Homemade Cowboy Butter Seasoning Substitute
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon dried parsley
½ teaspoon dried chives
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
¼ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon lemon pepper (optional but recommended)
Stir the spices together, then add them to your melted butter just like you would the packet seasoning. This blend gives you the same garlicky, buttery flavor with a little herb and heat balance that Cowboy Butter seasoning is known for.
Add red pepper flakes while cooking or sprinkle extra on top before serving. You can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper or use a spicy cowboy butter seasoning blend for more heat.
